Promoting Diversity at the Golden Globes

Golden Globe Awards, Hollywood Foreign Press Association

Diversity has always been part of the program at Terry Anzur Coaching Services. So when I was asked to serve on the credentials review committee of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA) I jumped at the chance to help bring positive change to the Golden Globes.

The Golden Globes ceremony honors the best in film and television entertainment. The telecast was removed from the NBC broadcast airwaves after it was revealed that the organization had no black members in its 77-year history. That’s shocking at a point in history when great journalists and effective on-camera performers represent every color of the rainbow.

Journalism educator and talent coach Terry Anzur is one of five members of the HFPA credentials review committee, helping to bring a new era of diversity, equity and inclusion to the Golden Globes.

Under the leadership of the nine-member credentials committee and HFPA President Helen Hoehne, I was one of 5 journalism professionals who reviewed applications from prospective new members.

HFPA members can live anywhere in the USA, but must work for a foreign media outlet in print, radio, TV, online or photojournalism. It was exciting to review a worldwide array of work samples and select the most diverse roster of new Golden Globe voters in the HFPA’s history.

I’ve always enjoyed watching the Golden Globes more than the Oscars; the freewheeling format that gives all the nominees a chance to party. Here’s hoping that these positive steps forward will bring the ceremony back to a worldwide television audience — a celebration where everyone is invited and welcome.

Over the years as a journalism educator, I’ve been proud to coach groundbreaking clients. Some have achieved important “firsts” in their markets. Whether representing indigenous people as reporters in front of the camera, or bringing independent news coverage to a country emerging from 40 years of dictatorship, it all makes our profession stronger and better. Whatever challenge your news organization or company is facing, get in touch and let me know how I can help you reach your talent goals.
